Bird Mafia is a Portland, Oregon based design company inspired by the intricate and unique papercutting art form. Every Bird Mafia design begins as hand-cut paper before making it's way into our collection of accessories for you and your home. Founded in 2009, the combination of Emily's love for papercutting and skill at her sewing machine naturally guided the two to create a business. Amid the handmade revolution in indie craft fairs and the DIY movement they discovered in young adulthood, operations began small with only a few designs and a couple of handmade products. Today they have grown their line and business to stock stores throughout Portland and the United States.

Bird Mafia strives to make the best choices for products and materials possible environmentally and socially. From organic cotton bags made in the USA to using 100% USA made materials for our pillows to collaborating with local businesses and printing with non-toxic water based inks. We take the time to heavily weigh our decisions when sourcing materials, so we can feel good about what we are making.

Papercut Artist / Owner / Maker

Emily Brown is the papercut artist responsible for creating all the Bird Mafia designs and has been cutting paper for over a decade. Emily borrowed her partner/husband's xacto knife in 2007. Soon after, what started as "playing" with papercutting turned to devotion. Since then she has honed her papercutting skills and built Bird Mafia as a way to share her art and love for papercut design. When she is not creating/making for Bird Mafia or working on new art pieces, Emily enjoys hiking the trails of the Pacific Northwest and dancing in her living room.

You can see more about Emily’s papercutting and learn about her process as an artist on Season 1 Episode 2 of Paper Tigers on Facebook Watch.

(Emily eventually got her own xacto knife.)
